Not only in case of rain, also if you need some more heat in your campfire or the fire just won't start properly: use some resin from fir and pinetree - powerful tinder!
Here in Norway people cut trees or hammer a nail in them to have the resin flowing, since trees are abundantly present here - so noone talks about "hurting" a tree. The next user of a campsite can harvest lots of resin but often you find trees which heal themselves with that resin when the bark is hurt, so no need to do that at all.
